In the 16th century, Torgau experienced a glorious heyday as the favoured residence of the Saxon electors and embodied the spirit of an Electoral Saxon state capital.
Hartenfels Palace in particular is closely associated with the Ernestine line, including Frederick the Wise, John the Steadfast and John Frederick the Magnanimous. Frederick the Wise, who was born at Hartenfels in 1463, not only promoted the arts, but was also an important supporter of Martin Luther. After his death in 1525, his brother John the Steadfast also championed the Reformation and art. John Frederick the Magnanimous, who took over the electorship in 1532, had the palace further extended and became known for his role as a Protestant prince.
With around 6,000 inhabitants, Torgau was one of the ‘big cities’ at the time and impressed with its vibrancy and strength. The market square in particular, lined with magnificent patrician houses and the imposing Renaissance town hall, bears witness to the former power and prosperity of the town's citizens. This architectural masterpiece was built in just two years and united representative rooms such as the banqueting hall, the council chamber, the courtroom, the archives and trading areas under its roof. The magnificent bay window on the drinking parlour, which was added later, is a particular eye-catcher and invites visitors to linger.
Thanks to its strategic location on important long-distance trade routes, Torgau played an important role not only as a royal seat but also as a centre of trade. In addition to the magnificent castle and churches, the numerous, excellently preserved Renaissance town houses stand out, which are exceptional in their unity and diversity.
Today, this fascinating history can be experienced in a particularly impressive way on the Torgau Museum Trail: Here, selected, lavishly restored buildings open their doors to visitors. Torgau is rightly considered one of the most beautiful Renaissance towns in Germany. With a little imagination, a walk through the historic old town or a themed tour of the town will take you on an unforgettable journey back in time to the early 16th century.
