A very old east-west long-distance trade route (12th century), which connected the east of Europe with the west, ran directly through Torgau. The town was also of outstanding geostrategic importance for the military.
The town itself, including its Elbbrücken river crossing, had to be secured and fortified.
The exhibition features exhibits relating to Torgau as a Saxon fortress on the Elbe and the state of Saxony, 1810-1815. The Saxon fortress was temporarily under French command during Napoleon's reign in 1813.
The main part of the exhibition consists of valuable objects and depictions of the town fortress of Torgau as a Prussian fortress on the Elbe and on the border with Saxony. Saxon Torgau became Prussian after the Congress of Vienna.
Information on Torgau Fortress is available in the form of four publications (German): “Der Brückenkopf”, “Fort Zinna”, “Das Hauptwerk” and “Stadt, Festung, Wasser”.
