Education Center for Nature and Environment at the Great Pond Torgau
Just outside the city gates of Torgau, the "Großer Teich Torgau" recreational and nature reserve lies like a green belt around Saxony's largest pond. Created 500 years ago for the Electoral Court's fishing industry, the pond is an important breeding and resting area for many bird species.
In the midst of this natural idyll, directly on the "Großer Teich" (Great Pond), is the "Biberhof Torgau" nature conservation station of the NABU Saxony regional association.
From children and young people who visit the station as part of hiking and project days, to ornithologists and species specialists who use it for professional meetings, to excursion groups, walkers, and casual visitors, everyone is warmly welcome at the Biberhof.
On group excursions to the pond area and the nearby beaver territory, visitors explore, observe, and identify the flora and fauna. Meanwhile, they are taught age-appropriate information about species, ecological relationships, and practical measures and conflicts in nature conservation. They also learn more about current nature and environmental topics through lectures and project events. An extensive exhibition of taxidermied animals, nesting boxes and aids, a wealth of nature literature in the building, and a natural garden with a clay oven complement the station's offerings.
One of the highlights of the event is the Autumn Festival at the Biberhof, which takes place every year on the first weekend in November as part of the fishing season for the Great Pond.
