Tales from the fairytale castle
The magnificent building is constantly changing and has repeatedly become a hotspot throughout history: Luther consecrated what was probably the first Protestant church building at Hartenfels Castle, making the castle chapel a trendsetter. Napoleon wanted Hartenfels as part of the Saxon-Napoleonic fortress and the Prussians used it as barracks after the Congress of Vienna. At the end of the Second World War, the Allies shook hands here and the castle on the Elbe became a meeting place. The DEFA classic ‘Sleeping Beauty’ captured the Great Wendelstein, which was getting on in years at the time, on the film screen and awoke the fairytale castle from a long sleep. Today, the unique architectural masterpiece of the early Renaissance shines again and bears witness to the glory and splendour of the former electoral residence.
The special exhibition ‘FAIRYTALES’ focuses on all these highlights of world history and tells the story of Hartenfels Castle from the perspective of contemporary witnesses using authentic artefacts and interactive media. Exciting and informative for the whole family, for globetrotters and walkers alike.
