The first bear capture was mentioned as early as 1425. While the castle served other purposes after its time as a residence, for example as barracks, the bears temporarily disappeared. But in the 1950s, committed citizens of Torgau revived the old tradition: they set up an outdoor enclosure in the castle moat. Shortly afterwards, the first pair of bears moved in as a gift from Leipzig Zoo.
Jette the bear played a special role in recent history. In May 2018, her 30th birthday was celebrated by Torgau residents and tourists. Until her death in October 2023, at the proud age of 35, she significantly exceeded the typical life expectancy of brown bears with her remarkable mobility.
Today, Benno and Bea enliven the castle moat. The two came to Torgau from North Rhine-Westphalia as two-year-old cubs in 2015. With new stables and a spacious outdoor enclosure, they are lovingly cared for. From February to November, depending on the weather, visitors can watch them in the moat during the day and gain a vivid impression of this history steeped in tradition.
