From 23 August 2025, the Torgau Museum will host an exciting special exhibition focusing on the diverse work of artist Gustav Hagemann, complemented by works by his wife Gertrud Hagemann and insights into the fascinating culture of the Sꞻmi.
Entitled ‘Gustav Hagemann – Painter, Sculptor, Teacher, Field Researcher – The Torgau Years’, the exhibition will tell you more about the life of an artist who lived from 1891 to 1982 and worked in Torgau for many years. As an art and sports teacher at Torgau Grammar School, he influenced generations of students before gaining fame as an expressionist ‘painter of the north’ with his colourful, northern-inspired paintings.
The exhibition shows Hagemann's artistic range – from painting and sculpture to his field research among the Sami, whose culture touched him deeply and became a lifelong passion. This is complemented by textile works and photographs by Gertrud Hagemann, as well as art, clothing and everyday objects of the Sami.
Look forward to a unique opportunity to discover the artistic and cultural heritage of this special personality – with loans from the collection of Martin Hagemann and the Museum Schloss Salder, Salzgitter.
On exhibition until 9 November 2025 at the Torgau City and Cultural History Museum.
